Newborn Sessions

When do I need to book a newborn session?

It’s best to get booked in when you are entering your second trimester, but please don’t let that stop you from contacting me if you are past that time frame! Early is always ideal to ensure date availability, but I’m also very flexible on making time for clients who just didn’t get around to scheduling before baby arrived.

What do you capture of just baby?

The majority of your gallery images include photographs taken of just your newborn. For example, I like to get details of tiny little feet, lips, that button nose and tuft of fluffy hair. In addition to the details, I'll also photograph your newborn with a few larger props and then on my posing table.

Can I bring siblings?

(Full newborn session only) YES and trust me, these are incredibly special pictures. In addition to preserving memories of parents with baby, siblings are always welcome. We take care of these family portraits right at the beginning while everyone is in a good mood and still enthusiastic. Please don't worry about your 2 year old being too young or melting down. I have lots of experience with young kids and have different tricks up my sleeve to get a few gorgeous images of all your kids together. Plus, I’m a mum of four myself!

How long does a typical photo session last?

A full newborn session typically takes 2-3 hours. As long as baby is happy and sleeping, I’m able to finish almost all my sessions in about 2 hours. However, baby does run the show and I always listen to their needs to keep them safe. I will always pause if needed for nursing or feedings. Also, fair warning if baby gets those darn hiccups! Those can take a bit to resettle baby and get them asleep again.

What do I need to bring?

Just you and baby! I have all kinds of props, blankets, wraps, headbands and hats for both boys and girls in a range of colors and shades. You don’t have to bring anything unless you have certain items you’d specifically like photographed. Some clients bring handmade blankets or items embroidered with baby’s name.

How long until I get my images?

Within a 3-4 days I will share a couple of photos from your session as a sneak peek - this will sometimes go on Instagram / Facebook (with consent). Within 2-3 weeks of your session, you will receive your secure online gallery. You will be able to view all watermarked images from your session and from there you can either select the included images you wish to receive as part of your original package, or upgrade to purchase the entire gallery.

What happens if my baby is awake?

Sometimes, babies do not want to fall asleep during their photo sessions. While it’s rare for babies to stay awake for the entire session, don’t worry! Newborns are often content to look around at the world and take in everything going on around them. Sometimes awake shots are the parents favorite shots!

What is the best age for a session?

You should schedule newborn photos between 4 and 21 days after the baby is born to get the best photos. I ask that you call or email me in the first 2 days of life so we can pick the best day for your session. At that age, baby still has those adorable, wrinkled hands and feet, the tiniest fingers and toes they will ever have. Babies less than three weeks old also sleep more and tend to be quieter in general, making this the ideal time for those great sessions.

My baby doesn't sit unaided, can I still book?

Please do! Every age is great to photograph. I have a few different props to help support whichever milestone baby is at. There are many different angled shots to capture, not all of them require a baby to sit up.

What if my child is not behaving?

My sessions are designed to be fun, fast moving and very natural. I always try to get the posed pictures done first and then dedicate the rest of the session for natural photos. You will get beautiful shots from your photo session. So don’t worry about your kids, I will take care of everything.

What should we wear?

If parents/siblings are getting in the shots, I suggest getting a little dressed up for a photo session. For men, this could mean a buttoned shirt. For women, hair done and a little make-up. For kids – stay away from bold patterns, characters, writing on shirts and make sure the clothes fit well.

How long does a photo session last?

The duration of a photo session varies depending on the type of package you have chosen. A full shoot with more than one person can take up to 2 hours. This is to ensure everyone has had a good amount of time in front of the camera. My mini sessions are up 30 minutes, which is still plenty of time to capture some great photos.

Can I reschedule if my child is sick?

I do not charge a penalty for weather or illness-related rescheduling as long as your rescheduled session takes place within 4 weeks of your originally scheduled session. Please do not bring a sick child to your session! On the other hand, do not reschedule if you or your child has acne, scratches or bruises. I can edit those out later.

Please get in touch if you have any other questions!
